Africa’s Urban Realities: Better Cities for an Integrated, Prosperous and Peaceful Continent
7 février 2020 @ 08:00 - 17:00
The event, held on the margins of the 33rd African Union Summit, included the launch of the SWAC/OECD flagship report, Africa’s Urbanisation Dynamics 2020: Africapolis, Mapping a New Urban Geography, which highlights Africa’s urban realities and diversities rarely captured in existing analyses, official statistics and narratives. The continent-wide analysis is based on the Africapolis database that maps 7 600 urban agglomerations across 50 countries from 1950 to 2015. Combining census data, satellite and aerial imagery and other cartographic sources, it is designed to enable comparative and long-term understanding of Africa’s urban dynamics. Understanding urbanisation, its drivers and impacts, is essential for designing development policies that are connected to the realities of contemporary Africa.
